My first memory of Valentine's Day was when I was 8 years old. I gave chocolate to a boy.  I don't remember much.  Oh, I remember he was "always" wearing short pants.  Since he was a tall boy, the shortness of the pants was exaggerated so stuck in my memory.  When I was in the 6th grade, after school, I ran up to a boy who was hanging out with his friend in the  school court yard.  I gave chocolate to him without saying anything, and quickly ran back to where he was not able to see me.  It still makes me a little embarrassed to think about it now.

In Japan, women give chocolate to men to deliver their feeling to him on Valentine's day.   If a girl gives chocolate to a boy who expresses that he shares the same feeling, she will be very happy.  But if a boy just accepts the chocolate, she will then spend most of her time playing with "flower petaling" loves me, loves me not, until White Day when a boy replies with his feeling.

As you may expect, Valentine's Day can be a big event for boys too.  A man may receive chocolate from a woman who he has never even met.  She may give him this chocolate saying "I use the same train every morning, and I like you..."   This kind of unexpected thing may happen on Valentine's day, because it is Valentine's day.   

Once you become an adult, you likely to have some important relationships such as your boss, coworkers, and good friends. In Japan, we give chocolate to these people if they are nice to you. This year's Valentine's Day is on Sunday, so me and my coworkers talked and settled to skip the work-place Valentine's day. 

I gave golf ball shaped chocolates to my father, chocolate truffles with sake to my brothers in law, and character shaped chocolates to my 3 little nephews.  (and even to my little niece! )

わたしが初めて参加したバレンタインデーは小学3年生のとき。ほとんど覚えていないけどね。あ、たしか半ズボンを"いつも"はいていた子だったように思う。背の高い子だったから、余計に半ズボン姿が印象深く残ってしまったのかもしれない。小学6年生のときには、放課後、中庭で友達と話してる彼に、走っていって何も言わずに渡して、そのまま彼から見えない場所まで走った記憶がある。こうして書いてる今も思い出すと、すこし恥ずかしい。

日本では、女性がチョコレートを渡すことで気持ちを伝える日が、バレンタインデー。チョコレートを渡した相手が自分と同じ気持ちでいるとわかった場合には、この日から夢のような日々が始まる。でも、とりあえず「ありがとう」と受け取ってもらえた場合には、ホワイトデーまで「すき、きらい、すき、きらい..」と花びらを数えるように過ごすのです。

バレンタインデーは女の子だけでなく男の人にとっても大きなイベントです。会ったこともない女性から突然に声をかけられ、「朝の電車がいつも一緒で、気になっています」なんてこともあるのです。こんな大胆なことが起きてしまうのもバレンタインデー！だから。

大人になってからのバレンタインデーの多くが義理チョコというものです。年齢を重ねていくと、大切にしておきたい関係が増えてくるのです。仕事場での上司、同僚、そしてなかのいい友達など。彼らに、「よろしくね」の意味も込めてチョコをおくります。今年はバレンタインデーが日曜日ということもあって、オフィスでチョコレートを渡すのはなし、というメール連絡がきました。

お父さんにはゴルフボールの形をしたチョコレートを、義弟さんたちには焼酎を練り込んだトリュフを、3人のかわいい甥っ子たちにはアンパンマンのキャラクターのチョコレートを。そして、姪っ子にも忘れずにひとつ、ね。

レイも、お母さんと妹たちからチョコレートや、お手製のチョコレートクッキーをもらいました。　（おいしかったー！）
